Over the years
History of DIG
The Deutsche-Indische Gesellschaft can look back on a history of more than 80 years.
It was first founded in Hamburg in 1942 in the presence of Subhas Chandra Bose, one of India’s leading freedom fighters. The inaugural meeting took place in the prestigious Hotel Atlantic, attended by distinguished representatives from the Foreign Office, the City of Hamburg, the military, as well as prominent figures from the fields of business and science
On the occasion of this founding on September 11, 1942, the Indian national anthem “Jana Gana Mana” was first played in Hamburg. In the post-war years, the DIG played a crucial role in reviving and strengthening the cultural and economic ties between the two nations. It became a platform for Germans to explore and appreciate the richness of Indian culture, philosophy, and its socio-economic progress.
The DIG now sees itself as a forum for information, contacts and the exchange of ideas between people who are committed to India and interested in its people, cultures, languages, history, religions, politics, economy and society.
